I need guidance on choosing a discount broker to buy shares. Who do you use and why?

I've been looking at Charles Schwab, E-Trade, Ameritrade, Scottrade and TradeKing. Any questions or additional information you could give me would be greatly appreciated, as I have heard contradictory information (especially on e-Trade, Ameritrade, Scottrade and TradeKing hidden charges and poor customer service … and anything negative about Charles Schwab, but seem more expensive.)

I use Scottrade because they only charge $ 7.00 a trade. They only require a $ 500.00 minimum to open an account. When I set up the broker's account explains how to make computer online transactions. I am very satisfied.
