Im new shares and bonds. What should I do?

I have taken many classes in economics and marketing classes, but I'm not sure exactly how enter the equity trading business. Does anyone have any first hand advice? As scottrade against other companies, etc. Thanks! Any help on what I do to get in would be greatly appreciated!
